MAKING ITS MARK
The new Post Office in Sarsfield
Street got off to a busy start on Monday last September 8th.
The new post master (though she wouldn’t claim that
title) is Catherine O’Brien from Ballyshane, Doner-aile.
She is helped by Niamh Boyle from Charleville who had worked
part time in the former office in Lord Edward Street. Also
involved in the new mini Post Office is Eamonn Leen whose
transfer to Tipperary town has been put back a week to help
with the setting up of the new service. Catherine O’Brien
has worked part time in several Post Offices before taking
charge in Kilmallock, so she is quite comfortable with her
new responsi-bilities.
A full range of services are available, and in addition to
all that, the new Post Office will stay open during lunch
time from Monday to Friday. The hours of opening are 9a.m.
to 5.30p.m. from Monday to Friday with a half day on Saturdays,
9a.m. to 1p.m.

Track & Field season ends
on a high!
Our young athletes headed for Glantane, Co. Cork for their
final track and field meeting of the season. Our team was
somewhat depleted as about half of our athletes were away
on holidays. However, the athletes who attended did their
club proud. Dylan Walsh was first up for the team and took
bronze in the U10 100m with a gritty performance. He was followed
shortly by Shannon McCarthy in the U11 100m who stormed home
to take the gold. Next up were Ceile Corbett and Shannon Lewis
in the U12 100m and both girls fought hard to secure silver
and bronze respectively. Niall Hen-nessey and Mikey O’
Flaherty now took to the sprint track in the U13 100m. Niall
romped home to take gold with Mikey close on his heels to
take silver. With only sprinters left on the team the pres-sure
was on the Walsh girls and they did not disappoint. In the
U6 60m Zoe stormed home to take gold with her sister Kelly
snatching the gold in the U9 100m.
At this stage you would be forgiven for thinking that this
team had done enough for one day and could go home happy with
their days work. But no, this team were hungry for more. Out
on the long distance track Kelly Walsh lined up for the 400m.
In a very tactical race Kelly positioned herself well and
made her move with 80m to go as she powered home to just take
the gold. Shannon McCarthy was next for the gruelling 600m.
Again she put into practice what she has learned in training
and sat on the shoulder of the leader throughout the race
and then with a sudden injection of pace stormed home for
gold. Shannon Lewis then hit the track in the 800m where she
impressed with her tactical running and came home to take
silver in a very inten-se race. Mikey O’Flaherty was
our final long distance runner in the 800m. Mikey as always
ran a very professional race to take gold well within himself.
Meanwhile on the field Dylan Walsh was busy securing another
medal by taking silver in the ball throw and was joined by
Mikey O’Flaherty who secured bronze in his ball throw.
Kelly Walsh decided to have a go at a race she had never seen
before and took gold in the crawling race.
All that was left was the U13 mixed relay where Mikey, Ceile,
Shannon and Niall took to the track. Even after such a gruelling
day of competing, the team stormed home to make our final
medal of the day gold.
It was a great performance by all of our athletes with everyone
giving their all for their club. With such a great return
of medals, 19 in all, the future of Kil-mallock athletics
is bright. Good luck to all our athletes during the winter
season of cross country and indoor.
UNVEILING OF

describing the development of Dromin from the charter granted
in 1646 to hold a fair, the development of the parish through

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL
THROWS UP SOME GEMS
The third Medieval Town Festival
held last weekend combined the events associated with the
two previous festivals such as the Medieval Fair and the Battle
Enactments with a new innovation namely a lecture dedicated
to the memory of Mainchín Seoige. The inaugural Mannix
Joyce Lecture 'The Walled Town in Irish History' was given
by John Bradley senior history lecturer at Maynooth. The lecture
also was Kilmallock town’s contribution to Walled Town
Sunday. Mr. Bradley was a very popular lecturer at the Walled
Towns Conference which was held in Kilmallock in 2006 and
he didn’t disappoint on this occasion either. The upstairs
room at Friars’ Gate was just the right size for the
well attended lecture. Speaking without notes John described
how Norman towns were established and how settlers were attracted
in by the offer of a house and plot of ground on very good
terms, somewhat like the early pioneers who colonised the
Wild West in the U.S.A. The type of people involved were already
town dwellers in territory conquered by the Normans previously
and had skills in various crafts or in the art of business.
To protect themselves they built barriers of earth and wood
at first, later stone walls. They thus developed a very close
knit community. John praised the community spirit of such
towns. He answered queries from many members of the audience
before Robert Lee brought proceedings to a close with a very
appropriate few words.
Saturday morning saw the opening of the Medieval Market with
stalls selling a variety of craft products in the shadow of
the ancient town gate in Emmet Street. Meanwhile down town
and just outside the north wall ancient battles were being
fought. The wars of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries were
being re-created by groups from all over the country under
the expert eye of Sean Shields. Saturday night saw the visit
of The Fureys and Davie Arthur to Bulgaden Castle where their
performance delighted their hundreds of fans.
Sunday saw more warfare on the banks of the Lubagh including
a celebration of the Irish regiments who took part in the
American Civil War. The odd Roman soldier in full regalia
wandered about as did troubadours, storytellers and musicians
from 12th century France. The Festival ended near the bewitching
hour of midnight in the Dominican Priory with a performance
of the Midnight Court based on the famous 18th century poem.
The youthful Limerick drama group Teaspach gave a superb performance.
The cloister of the Abbey lit by candles placed in the construction
holes in the stonework created an air of mystery and magic
as an introduction to the play. Then everybody was ordered
indoors to the courtroom, segregated, men on the right, women
on the left, while the court argued the rights and wrongs
in dealings between the sexes. The use of the few items of
furniture in the Abbey was very clever. Everybody went home
happy through the flickering candles on one of the finest
evenings of our disastrous summer.
DEBS PHOTOS
The photographs are now available
for collection in Friars' Gate. Please collect them as soon
as possible. Group shots can be ordered as required.
VISITORS’ GUIDE LAUNCHED
A very useful addition was
made to the range of information leaflets about Kilmallock
when an eight-page guide to the Church of SS Peter and Paul
was launched last Friday, the Feast of the Assumption. Canon
William Fitz-maurice PP who launched the booklet said that
the feastday was an approp-riate occasion as one of the great
attractions of Kilmallock Church is the beautiful Harry Clarke
window depicting the Assumption. The booklet will be available
at the church and at several other information points in the
town. The publication is free of charge but any donations
towards getting it reprinted will be welcome. In the course
of a short address Canon Fitzmaurice paid tribute to the memory
of John K O’Leary for his involve-ment in photographing
the church and in collecting so much material reflecting life
in Kil-mallock during the last half century now gone. He also
thanked Noel Collins for the use of some of the material in
the detailed guide Clun Gloire Dé published in 2004
and John Mortell for his photographs. Members of the Tuesday
Club were also thanked for their interest in having the new
booklet published. There was a good attendance at the launch
especially from those interested in history, heritage and
tourism in the town. A very welcome guest at the launch was
Fr. Joe Cussen CC. Mile buiochas and thanks a million to the
men and women associated with the Pastoral Centre for preparing
the Centre and serving light refreshments.
